37th Annual Bradetich Double Bass Master Classes 2024

The Bradetich Double Bass Master Classes, held at the University of North Texas, are one of the longest-running events of their kind in the U.S., offering a highly concentrated week of study for aspiring bassists. Participants, who come from four continents as well as all corners of the U.S., receive optimum individual and group instruction in every aspect of double bass playing. The classes include daily two-hour sessions dealing with technique, orchestral repertoire, interpretation of solo literature, and bass ensembles rehearsed throughout the week. All participants have the opportunity to perform with piano accompaniment during the solo classes. The master classes end with a grand finale concert featuring ensemble performances by the participants and various guest bassists. These unique master classes are open to well-qualified high school and college students, young professionals, string teachers, and amateur double bass enthusiasts who seek to rejuvenate their love and knowledge of the double bass. To apply, please fill out the application opening on January 29th. Applications will close on June 1st. Early registration fee is due by May 1st, 2024.
Two levels of participation are available:

Full Participant: Full Participant: (Limit 30) Participate in all sessions and perform in the solo classes. The participants are expected to be able to play three-octave scales; have good knowledge of thumb position; and be able to play solo works at or above the difficulty level of the Eccles Sonata or the Dragonetti Concerto.

Auditor: No instrument. Will attend all sessions and take part in discussions
Arrival – Departure:
Registration/check-in is at 6:00pm on Monday, June 10th and the final concert ends at approximately 9:15 pm on Saturday, June 15th. ALL students must check in and register on Monday, including those who are not staying on campus during camp. We will be having a pizza party during registration so you can meet other students, and everyone will be well prepared to start Tuesday morning. For those staying on campus, check out is Saturday, June 15th, before the final concert. Students’ belongings will be stored on campus and can be picked up after the final concert.

Ms. Bernant will be giving a concert at the University of North Texas sponsored by Solano Basses, as well as a masterclass with selected students from the Bradetich Masterclasses and Bass Camps and a Lecture as part of the Summer Activities in the camps.

"23-year-old double bassist Nina Bernat, acclaimed for her interpretive maturity, expressive depth and technical clarity, emerges onto the world stage with awards and accolades, thrilling audiences everywhere.
In 2023, Nina is honored as a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and winner of the CAG Elmaleh Competition. Recent 1st prizes include the Barbash J.S. Bach String Competition, the Minnesota Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the Juilliard Double Bass Competition, and the 2019 International Society of Bassists Solo Competition.
Nina began her studies with her father, double bassist Mark Bernat. A recipient of the Kovner Fellowship, she continued her studies with bassist Tim Cobb and cellist Astrid Schween. She is currently completing her Artist Diploma at Juilliard.
Engaged in all aspects of double bass performance, in 2019 she was invited to perform as guest principal bassist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, serving under the batons of András Schiff and Osmo Vänskä. Additionally, as a substitute musician, Nina has appeared with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and plays regularly in that capacity with the New York Philharmonic.
Nina is in demand as a passionate chamber musician. She begins her involvement with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as a member of the Bowers Program in 2024. Among her regional chamber performances are appearances with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Series, and Mostly Music.
Nina’s 2023-2024 season includes a concerto debut with the Minnesota Orchestra and performances as guest principal of the Oslo Philharmonic.

The most famous bass concertos are those by Italian romantic Giovanni Bottesini, and this 23-year-old made that composer's second concerto exhilarating, love, and lyrical. Bernat is technically precise and impressively emotive, most memorably on the concerto's slow movement, when she made her instrument sound like a lovestruck operatic tenor.
